Coraline is a curious young girl who unlocks a mysterious door in her family’s new home and enters into an adventure in a parallel reality. On the surface, this “Other World” eerily mimics her own life – though it is much more fantastical. While encountering different versions of her own life ultimately, Coraline must rely on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to get back home.

Tonight’s Theme/Programming
Last summer we showed Mars Attacks at Fairview Park. Rather than just wait for dark and show a movie, we put together some fun programming that went with the theme of the movie. We had the actual flying saucer used in the movie at the park. The guys from the Armory at 2nd and Prospect Avenues brought over some HumVee’s and a crane to lift the saucer, we had Dr. Gary DeLeo a Lehigh University Astrophysicist talking about Mars Fact and Fiction, we had ladies from the Martian Tourism Authority there promoting the great vacation opportunities on Mars, we had a working 1/6th scale Mars Rover replica looking for signs of intelligent life at the park.
Over at Friendship we showed Kung Fu Panda. We had chinese themed decorations, a Tai Chi demonstration, martial arts demonstration, calligraphy demonstration, traditional chinese clothes to check out and try on, fireworks table by Celebration Fireworks that does Bethlehem’s 4th of July Fireworks, et.
In short, we have a good time before the movies. SO, come early and hang out with your friends and neighbors and see what we are up to this year at the Rose Garden!
Go to our Rose Garden page for pictures from last year to see what we have been up to.

Movie Start Times
Movies start a few minutes after sunset. Outdoor movies require it to be dark out in order to see the movie. Take a look at the sunset times in our weather forecast but are generally around 8:45-9:00pm. That doesn’t matter though because you are already there for the fun pre-movie events right?
Snack Shack
The “Snack Shack” at the Rose Garden is brought to you by the Nitschmann Middle School Cheerleaders. Your support of the Snack Shack supports the Nitschmann group and all their projects. They will be serving hot, buttery, fresh popped popcorn, hot dogs, soda/water and other tasty home baked treats. Bring your appetite! There are bathrooms at the Rose Garden so come early and don’t worry.
Weather
Weather is an issue with outdoor movies. We have to think of the safety of you….our audience, our volunteers and the equipment. Rain is bad for the electronics and wind can be a big deal with a 32×24 foot inflatable screen! In the event of bad weather, our makeup date is the next day. Please check the website the day of the event, check Facebook, call the office at 610-997-5732 and/or sign up for our Constant Contact Movies, Games and More email notification list. See the Subscribe box on the lower right on the Sidebar of the website. We also hang a “postponed” banner at the site if you happen to cruise by the venue.
We are going to attempt to be more daring this year as last year was very difficult with alot of “iffy” weather. Another issue with a bad forecast is a small turnout. If we show it anyway, we have to pay the licensing fees. If hardly anyone is going to turn out because the forecast isn’t great, that’s a factor as well. Yet another factor is what programming we may have planned on a given night. Lot’s of programming is challenging to reschedule so the more stuff we have planned, the more likely we are to give it a go.
We subscribe to pay weather services that is supposedly better than what’s available for free but we have seen incoming rain just dry up and clouds disappear more than a few times. Grrrrrr!

North by Northwest Neighborhood Initiative
The North by Northwest Neighborhood Initiative is the originator of these events. Our main website is www.nbnw-bpa.org. Check in there to see what else we have going on and/or check us out on Facebook. We have installed pan/tilt/zoom cameras at both Fairview and Friendship Parks that are monitored AND recorded 24/7/365 by the Bethlehem Police Department. We hope to do a few new things in the parks this year as well if we can find some funding. More on that as it develops.
